Whether or not you choose to study SEO depends on your interest in getting your website ranked highly by the search engines. Many marketers feel the algorithms set by Google are too complicated, time-consuming to understand or that they change too frequently to spend time learning. You could rely on other traffic methods.
However a few minor changes can make a difference. A book I would recommend to get you started is “SEO Step by step” by Caimin Jones. It offers help with keywords and understanding how and why you need to make changes to your website. It is packed full of information, ideas and references, there is even a two-week free trial of an SEO tool. which I cannot comment on as I haven’t tried it.
If you are looking for ways to record your statistics and monitor links to your website you could use Google analytics and Google webmaster tools. These will give you the opportunity to access your progress. This is achieved by adding a small piece of code to each webpage you would like recorded.
One little tip you may not have thought of: when you add photos to your pages to make the website more interesting, make sure the photos are actually on your website not elsewhere or any links back will go to the source not your website. You also need to add titles and tags to get the photos picked up by search engines. Have you noticed when you are on Google search pages, random photos, this is because pictures photos and videos rate highly with search engines and are another way to get traffic to your website.
Keywords are phrases that people type into Google when searching. Long-tail keywords are longer phrases for example: “I want to work at home on my computer” showing search results 440,000,000. A short-tail keyword could be: “work at home” search results 3,460,000,000. Showing there are many more searches for short-tail keywords, this demonstrates there is higher competition and it is harder to rank for short-tailed keywords.
Google’s search tool called keyword planner will help you find good keywords for your niche and is free to use. Google’s aim is to always make the information searches as relevant as possible; this is basically what you are ranked on and is how the algorithms are structured.
Make sure all your pages have relevant tags and titles to assist in their ranking. Include videos photos and pictures. Make sure they are small enough to load quickly or compress the file size (information in Caiman’s book)
These are just a few little tips that take moments to set up for improved search results. Look out for further hints and tips to improve your website. I would love to hear your comments.
